The article by Ethan Siegel is full of simplifications about science and draws seemingly logical but blatantly erroneous conclusions. The writer suggests that it is common-sense to research “both sides” of a topic, but “when it comes to issues like vaccinations, climate change, and the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2”, we need to follow the “actual expertise that legitimate experts have spent lifetimes developing”. Indeed, “When laypersons espouse opinions on those matters” or “take up the arguments of a contrarian scientist”, this “could lead to immeasurable, unnecessary suffering”.
